MAX Lending: A Countywide Collection-Sharing Service

If the Glendale Public Library doesn't own the item you're looking for, you have options!

The Glendale Public Library is a member of MAX Lending, which is a collection-sharing service for participating library systems in Maricopa County.

With your Glendale Public Library card, you can search the MAX catalog for titles that are not available through the Glendale Public Library system. If a copy is available from a MAX library, you can request that title and it will be sent to your preferred Glendale Public Library location for you to pick up. Most items can be checked out and returned just like regular library items.

Search the MAX catalog

What can I request?

At this stage, you can only request books from the MAX catalog.

How many requests can I make?

You can have up to five MAX requests on your account at any one time. This total includes not only MAX requests which have not yet arrived, but also any MAX items you currently have checked out.

Why did I receive an error message while trying to place my request?

If you have received an error message about circulation parameters, the most likely reason is that all copies are checked out from participating libraries. You can only request MAX titles with available copies. If all copies of a title you want are checked out, you can check back later and request it when one becomes available.

What if the book I want isn't included in the MAX catalog?

You can request items not included in the MAX catalog through our interlibrary loan service.

How will I know when my MAX request has arrived?

Will MAX books renew automatically?

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is the borrowing and lending of materials between libraries throughout the country. If the Glendale Public Library does not have the book or article you want, we can attempt to get it for you through the ILL system free of charge. We will try to find a library that has your requested material and ask that library to loan it to us, so we can loan it to you.

Request an ILL Online

What if I need help submitting my ILL request?

The free search at WorldCat can help you find more information about the materials you want (such as the ISBN number of a book). However, you can't submit ILL requests directly from this database.

You can also call 623-930-3600 or visit a library service desk at any of our locations for help.

Is there a limit to the number of items I can order through ILL?

Each patron is limited to no more than a combined six interlibrary loan items at any given time. This includes items on order or checked out. Any items requested over the limit of six will not be processed until other items are returned.

How long will it take to receive my requested material?

Requests typically take ten days to one month to fill. We make every effort to fill your request. However, we may be unable to obtain your material due to reasons beyond our control, including:

  • no participating library has purchased it;
  • it is in heavy demand at all participating libraries;
  • it is rare or a limited edition;
  • it is a reference work and cannot be borrowed via ILL.

How will I know when my request arrives?

When the material arrives, we will inform you using the same method you have chosen to receive your hold notices from the library. You may pick up the material at the library service desk of the location you selected on the request form. If you want to check the status of your request, please call 623-930-3558 and leave a message including your name and phone number.

How long can I keep my ILL material?

You may keep the material for three weeks, unless the lending library sets a shorter loan period.

How can I renew my ILL material?

We can request that a loaning library extend the due date on some materials. If you need an extension, please submit a request online.

Request an ILL Renewal

Please submit renewal requests at least three business days before the item is due. Due date extension is at the discretion of the lending library. Once the lending library has approved (or denied) a renewal request, we will contact you with the new due date or let you know if the item must be returned. Please be aware that it may take several business days for the lending library to respond to our request.

What if my ILL material becomes lost or damaged?

If an interlibrary loan item is returned damaged or lost by the patron, the associated fee is $52.

How can I order copies of articles?

You may obtain photocopies of magazine, journal, or newspaper articles through ILL. When you make your request, please supply us with the title of the article, as well as the title, date, volume number (if available), and the page numbers of the publication in which the article appears.

When an article request is filled, we are provided digital access to the requested material. You must provide a valid email address to receive the link to access the material. You can then view the article online, print it, or make copies.

Your use of the photocopy must follow the provisions for fair use specified in the Federal Copyright Act. Generally, this means you may use the photocopy for personal study. You may not reproduce it for any other purpose without obtaining permission from the holder of the copyright. Under copyright law, you cannot request more than five articles from a single magazine or journal in a year.

Is there anything I can't order through ILL?

We are unable to obtain the following materials via ILL:

  • new bestsellers
  • reference works
  • DVDs
  • compact discs
  • videocassettes
  • audiocassettes
  • phonodiscs

It may be possible to order microfilm and microfiche, but there are restrictions involved. Please call 623-930-3558 to learn more.

If you have additional questions, please call 623-930-3558 and leave a message, including your name and phone number.
