Xeriscape Demonstration Garden

The award-winning Xeriscape Demonstration Garden at the Glendale Main Library began its initial construction in June of 1990. Since that time, the garden has grown to nearly four acres in size with more than 400 species of plants. To help visitors identify the large number of low-water-use plants displayed, many of the plants are labeled with common and botanical names. Considered one of the best demonstration gardens in the state, it features interesting plants for all to enjoy. It's also home to a StoryWalk®.

The garden is open to the public every day of the year. By walking the garden paths, you’ll see plants at their mature size, find examples of good plant combinations, and discover ideas for your landscape. There is no cost to walk through the garden. It is recommended you bring a notepad and pen to write down names of plants you would like in your yard.

About the Peacocks

Sahuaro Ranch Park, next door to the Main Library, is home to a group of peahens and peacocks. The peafowl often visit the Main Library, thanks to good roosting spots in the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden and lots of admiring library visitors.

While visiting the library, please respect our feathered friends by not chasing or touching the birds. Do not disturb the peacocks to get them to display their tails. Peacocks, particularly during mating season (March-July), are easily agitated and have sharp claws and beaks. If staff see you harassing the birds, you will be asked to leave the library campus.

If you see a peacock you think is injured, please let library staff know.
